Overall Purpose of the Job:

Undertaking the highest attainable standards in the provision of Barista services, ensuring that agreed standards of coffee & beverage, food preparation, service and hospitality are consistently delivered in an efficient, safe and hygienic manner, meeting individual customer expectations as requested.

Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities and Duties:

  • Undertake Barista services of hot beverage and related café products, ensuring the consistent delivery of product and service quality, in line with customer requirements and to the agreed quality standards
  • Assist, as required, the day-to-day stock requisitioning & control for Barista goods
  • Assist with, as agreed and as far as reasonably practicable, the safe keeping and maintenance of the coffee and hot beverage equipment and machinery to the required standards of hygiene and safety
  • Carry out the service of food for customers to the agreed standards of technical service and hospitality including continual clearance of used items and food/debris, aiming to maintain the agreed standards of professional presentation and hygiene at all times
  • Undertake retail duties as required including both food & beverage items along with non-consumable as are available within service outlets
  • Carry out cleaning of catering and retail service areas as required, aiming to maintain professional presentation and company hygiene standards at all times
  • Undertake cash handling procedures as agreed via training and instruction, ensuring any tills/floats used are operated and accounted for to the agreed process and standards
  • Undertake and ensure the hygienic disposal of food waste to the agreed standards as required
  • Assist with the cleaning of crockery, cutlery and glassware, using dishwasher/glass washer as required, observing safety procedures as agreed via training and instruction
  • Undertake the safe keeping and maintenance of food storage and preparation equipment to the required standards of hygiene and safety as agreed
  • Monitor for any damage to any part of the premises, equipment, fittings or furnishings, to take any subsequent appropriate action to assist in preventing accidents or health hazards, and to report any such matters to a supervisor or manager without delay in the appropriate manner
  • Observe and follow, as trained upon and instructed, policies and procedure, and specifically those related to Health & Safety and Food Hygiene, which are critical to the operation
  • Work and liaise effectively and supportively with all Somerset Larder colleagues in the interests of contributing to a professional work environment
  • Assist across the operational boundaries within as and when agreed, in-keeping with the role and/or working development opportunities
  • Ensure that all personal actions are in line with the overall environmental aims of Somerset Larder, undertaking all tasks in an environmentally sustainable manner – promoting environmental sustainability where opportunity presents

Essential Attributes and Requirements:

  • QCF Level 1 Key Skills / Working towards NVQ L1 in Hospitality-related subject
  • Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate (formerly Basic Food Hygiene) which may be attained within initial probationary period of employment
  • Service operating and customer care/service standards skills awareness, as required within the role
  • Basic knowledge of general key Health and Safety requirements relating to the role
  • Verbal communication skills to the hospitality requirements of the post
  • Interpersonal/team orientation
  • A positive attitude towards busy hospitality services

Desirable Attributes and Requirements:

  • Speciality Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE) Professional Qualification
  • Level 2 Key Skills / working towards NVQ L2 in Hospitality-related subject
  • Hospitality service skills gained in a similar environment
  • An awareness of Health and Safety Issues through appropriate practice – including HACCP, COSHH, Manual Handling
  • H&S qualification/training course completion
